Boys' basketball: Ashby second in LEC, Osakis, Minnewaska, West Central Area fall

The Ashby boys’ basketball team passed its last test in the Little Eight Conference with a 69-43 win over Underwood last Friday night.

The Arrows led 39-21 at the break and kept a comfortable lead the rest of the way. Riley Mickelson was again the catalyst as the senior post came two blocks shy of a triple-double with 21 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks.

“I thought it took us a little while to get focused and bring up our intensity,” head coach Jeremy Knick said. “But once we settled in and got to work, we played a good game.”

Blake Ohren added to Mickelson’s big night with 16 points, five assists and four blocks. J.P. Moe had 12 points and five assists, while Tanner Langlie had 11 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

Ashby wrapped up the LEC schedule alone in second place at 10-2. The Arrows will wrap up the regular season at home against Wheaton-Herman-Norcross on Thursday night.

OSAKIS DROPS TWO

The Osakis boys’ basketball team ran into two of the best teams in the Prairie Conference last week and dropped to 4-10 in league play with losses against Browerville and Upsala.

The Silverstreaks welcomed in the Tigers last Thursday night and fell behind from the get-go. They trailed 33-13 at the break as Browerville went on to win 54-31. That came two days after Upsala came into Osakis and left with a 59-48 win.

The Tigers (22-1, 13-1 Prairie) are ranked seventh in the latest Class A polls and played like it last Thursday. They held Osakis to just 33 percent shooting in the game and 25 percent in the first half. Mitch Herzog had 11 points to lead the Silverstreaks. Joe Roggenbuck added 10 for Osakis.

It was a similar story in the loss to Upsala last Tuesday night. The Cardinals jumped out to a 35-17 lead at the break by holding the Silverstreaks to just 5-of-16 shooting in the first half.

Osakis came to life in the second half. The Silverstreaks cut into the lead by outscoring Upsala 31-24 in the final 18 minutes, but it was too little, too late.

Herzog and Roggenbuck were the only two scorers in double figures. Both had 19 points, and Roggenbuck added 11 rebounds for the double-double.

Osakis will go on the road on Friday night at West Central Area for the final tuneup before the playoffs.
