CLC_performers

Jack Wensman has been named Central Lakes Conference performer of the week in boys' hockey. In the win against Fergus Falls, Wensman scored one goal and three assists.

Kris Aaseng has been named in boys' swimming and diving. At the Central Lakes Conference meet, Aaseng won the 200 freestyle, anchored in twp relays and won the 500 freestyle, which set a new CLC record of 4:59.07.

Briquelle Bowden has been named in gymnastics. At the Central Lakes Conference meet, Bowden was second in All-Around, third on the beam, and sixth on the floor routine.

Warnes sets

personal bests

Alexandria's Jolynn Warnes set six personal college bests during the Bison Open Pentathlon to place second overall.

Warnes scored 2,782 points in her first ever pentathlon. She ran the hurdles in 9.76, high jumped 4-8.25, threw the shot 26-3.5, had a distance of 16-5.75 in the long jump and finished with her first ever 800-meter run in 2:45.21.

Warnes followed that up with a college career best in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.68 for 10th place and was seveth in the triple jump with a distance of 34-3.5.

Vintage snowmobile races on Lake

Minnewaska

The vintage snowmobile chase for the Hetteen Cup will be Saturday, March 3 on Lake Minnewaska in Glenwood, beginning at noon in front of the Lakeside Ballroom.

Registration is from 8:30-11 a.m. There will also be a swap meet and vintage sled show.

Spring training

baseball camp

Mike Kluver and Gerry Hoelscher, along with Lakes Area Recreation, will hold spring training baseball camp for players in grades 5-8 on March 27 and 29, and April 2-3 at the Discovery Middle School gym.

Times for players in grades 5-6 will be 6-7:30 p.m. and for 7-8 will be 7:30-9 p.m.

Camp will cover pitching, hitting, fielding and game situations.

Players should bring gloves, bats and gym shoes.

Cost is $30 and space is limited. Register by calling Lakes Area Recreation at (320) 762-2868.

Minnesota Lakes Deer Camp

The first Minnesota Lakes Deer Camp, which includes a social hour and banquet, will be held at the Broadway Ballroom in Alexandria on Saturday, March 17, beginning at 5 p.m.

The event is sponsored by Whitetails Unlimited and features raffles, auction and door prizes.

Tickets are only available by advance purchase. Deadline is March 9.

Star of the North registration open

Team sports registration is now open for the 25th annual Star of the North games in Rochester June 15-24.

The Star of the North games is Minnesota's annual Olympic-style amateur sports festival with more than 4,500 athletes from all over the state competing in 17 different sports.

All-Star traveling baseball team

The Satchel Paige All-Stars traveling baseball team is looking for youth players ages 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18 years old that would like to be a part of the 2012 summer team that will include trips to Cincinnati, Ohio, Omaha, Nebraska, Springfield, Missouri, Orlando, Florida and Puerto Rico.

Ashby A's basketball tournament

Ashby A's will host their 27th annual men's basketball tournament on March 3.

Pacesetter tournaments set

The Pacesetter Region 6 playoffs for Minnesota Youth Basketball state championships will be held at Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls and Frazee High School March 31 and April 14.

The tournaments are for girls' teams in grades 5-9, with the Region 6 champions being invited to the eight team Minnesota state championship in St. Cloud.

Lakes Area Recreation 35-older open gym will run through the middle of April on Sundays from 7-9 p.m. at the Discovery Middle School gym.

Indoor batting cages, hitting leagues offered by YMCA

The Alexandria Area YMCA will offer an extended winter youth baseball program. Hitting leagues, pitching clinics, and open gyms, complete with batting cages will be available for area baseball youth.

The indoor hitting league for baseball players ages 8 through amateur age level will run March and April and will be held in the YMCA indoor batting cage. The leagues are offered to members and non-members.

The YMCA indoor batting cage/pitching machine is available for members and non-members from 7-9 p.m. Fridays, 5-7 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m.-noon Sundays. The batting cage is staffed. For more information, call (320) 834-9622.

Montevideo basketball tournament

The 17th annual Montevideo Youth Basketball Tournament for boys and girls in grades 5-8 is March 16-17 with three games guaranteed.

The 8th grade girls' tournament will be played Friday night.

Entry deadline is Friday, March 2.

There is also a 4th grade boys' and girls' jamboree on Friday night with a guarantee of two games.

LAR open swim

Lakes Area Recreation open swim is now available Sundays at the Discovery Middle School pool and is open to both youth and adults from 1-3 p.m.

Hours may vary due to holidays or organized events.

Children that cannot touch the bottom of the pool or cannot swim must be directly accompanied in the water by an adult.

Monthly schedules are posted at DMS and are available at the LAR office.
