B-E girls' basketball: Chargers split with Falcons, Dutchmen

The Brandon-Evansville girls’ basketball team split its last two games after dropping a 70-48 game against Melrose on Tuesday and beating Park Christian on the road last Friday night.

The Chargers led by one at the break against Melrose but were outscored 46-23 in the second half. The Dutchmen shot 51 percent (29-57) on the night to overcome a game-high 30 points from Brandon-Evansville’s Heather Strese. Megan Friedrich added 10 points for the Chargers.

“They shot well in the second half,” head coach Dick Simpson said. “They played pretty good defense, and we had a hard time getting shots off.”

Brandon-Evansville used another big night from Strese to hold off Park Christian last Friday night. The senior had 25 points and 18 rebounds, while Megan Kokett added a career-high 16 points. She proved to be the difference after hitting three threes on the night. That allowed the Chargers to overcome a 26-point performance from Park Christian freshman Sydney Weber.

“We played pretty well,” Simpson said. “We shot well. The night before we shot 27 percent and then come back and go 49 percent…Weber has close to 1,000 points already. She can get her shot almost any time she wants, but they couldn’t really stop Heather inside either.”

The Chargers also dominated the glass, where they outrebounded the Falcons 33-16. That helped secure the win and move Brandon-Evansville to 16-7 overall. The Chargers’ final game of the regular season was set for last night, Thursday, against Wheaton-Herman-Norcross at home.
