B-E boys' basketball: Chargers split
Zach Hintermeister's triple-double helps Brandon-Evansville rebound from a loss with a win over CGB.
The Brandon-Evansville boys’ basketball team rebounded from a 48-34 loss to Hillcrest Lutheran Academy last Friday by tying a season high in points in a 69-58 win over Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Tuesday.
The Chargers got just 23 points from their top three scorers in John Haseman, Jared Goehringer and Zach Hintermeister in the loss to the Comets. Four days later, those three combined for 60 to lead Brandon-Evansville to its eighth win of the season.
“It’s no secret we need those guys to be very good offensively,” head coach John Holsten said.
Hintermeister played one of the best games of his career in all facets. He finished with a triple-double of 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. He also added five steals and six blocks.
“He was pretty exceptional,” Holsten said. “He got the ball to where we needed it to go. He found open teammates, and most importantly, we finished.”
Haseman led the Chargers in scoring with 23, while Goehringer added 22 points and eight rebounds. Hunter Langlie added the final nine points for Brandon-Evansville.
The Chargers found out what happens when they don’t get much scoring from that trio last Friday night. Haseman had 16 points but was the only Brandon-Evansville player in double figures. Goehringer was held to four points and six rebounds and Hintermeister had three points and three assists. Blake Satterlie was the team’s second leading scorer with seven.
The Chargers shot 12-of-30 in the game and were outrebounded 22-12. That allowed the Comets to sweep the season series with Brandon-Evansville and move to 11-7 overall and 8-4 in the Little Eight Conference.
“We have never played well there,” Holsten said. “At least not since I’ve been here…we got off to a good start in the second half, but they were able to go on a run and keep it in double digits most of the way.”
The Chargers will welcome in an undefeated Battle Lake team tonight, Friday, in the last LEC game of the season for both teams. The Battlers (21-0, 11-0 LEC) are ranked third in the latest Class A polls. They beat Brandon-Evansville 56-23 the first time these two teams played on January 20.
“We didn’t play them well the first time,” Holsten said. “It’s a big game for us for seeding purposes. It would be a big win for us. They’re as good a transition team as any team you’ll find in the area.”
