The Alexandria wrestlers saw the team portion of their season come to an end this past Saturday in the opening round of the Section 8AAA tournament in Brainerd.
The Cardinals came in as the ninth seed and matched up with eighth-seeded Sauk Rapids-Rice for the right to face top-seeded Little Falls. Alexandria’s Trent Piepenburg won the 103-pound match against Taylor Rau, but the Cardinals couldn’t keep that momentum going in a 45-18 loss to the Storm.
“This season was a season of growth as each and every time out our team improved,” head coach Tom Ellison said. “The wrestlers competed well but when you have two juniors, four sophomores and the rest junior high age wrestlers, our experience level is below anyone we faced. This will help us next year as the team is made up of real competitors.”
The Storm took control of the match by winning five straight after Piepenburg’s win for Alexandria. The Cardinals’ Anthony Hubbard broke the stretch at 145 pounds with a 7-3 win over Nate Krepp. Mike Schluter and Shawn Nelson then followed with back-to-back decision wins at 160 and 170 pounds, respectively.
The Cardinals’ final win of the day came from Justin Cumberbatch at 285 pounds. The freshman heavyweight dominated his opponent, pinning Ryan Tripeke in 1:01 to wrap up the team season for Alexandria.
The Cardinals will now turn their attention to the individual portion of the 8AAA tournament. That will kick off at 5 p.m. tonight, Friday, at Sauk Rapids High School before wrapping up tomorrow.
