Spaghetti for a skatepark

This Sunday, with a plate of spaghetti and silent auction bids, area residents can help local Girl Scouts Bria Nienaber and Brooke Waldorf earn the Gold Award. The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn; similar to the Boy Scouts’ Eagle Scout award.

This Sunday, with a plate of spaghetti and silent auction bids, area residents can help local Girl Scouts Bria Nienaber and Brooke Waldorf earn the Gold Award.

The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn; similar to the Boy Scouts’ Eagle Scout award.

To earn the Gold Award the girls have to complete a project that fulfills a need in their community, creates change and has potential for lasting impact.

For their project, Nienaber and Waldorf intend to build a skateboard park in Osakis.

The project is estimated to cost about $35,000.

The girls are continuing their fundraising efforts by hosting a spaghetti feed fundraiser on Sunday, February 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Osakis VFW.

Free will donations will be accepted.

The event will also feature a silent auction with a wide variety of items on which to bid.

Online donations are also being accepted at www.mngive.org, use keywords Osakis Skateboard Park.

Matching funds are also being provided by First National Bank of Osakis and Douglas County Thrivent.

Skatepark details

Plans are preliminary, but the girls expect the skatepark to be located in the southwest corner of Park Osagi.

The skatepark will feature several fixtures for doing tricks – like rails, ramps, a pyramid and a bowl (it’s like a big, empty swimming pool sunk into the park).

Parks like this are generally used by skateboarders, but this park will also be designed to be functional for rollerbladers and BMX bike riders.

The girls are currently working with local contractors to finalize project plans.

The project is expected to cost – at most – $100,000. So far, Bria and Brooke have raised $12,500.

Bria is the daughter of Mike and Susan Nienaber of Osakis and Brooke is the daughter of John and Nancy Waldorf of Osakis.
