Willmar boys' hockey rallies from two-goal deficit to end Alexandria's season
The Alexandria boys’ hockey team saw its season come to an end a lot sooner than expected in a 4-3 loss to Willmar last night.
Second-seeded Alexandria got out to a 3-1 lead in the second period before Willmar stormed back with three unanswered goals the rest of the way. Alexandria controlled the pace of play for much of the third, but Willmar’s Hunter Schneider got the only goal when he connected 9:16 into the period for what proved to be the game winner.
Penalties proved to be a huge factor in the game. Alexandria committed only three minors, but Willmar capitalized on two of those with power play goals. The second one gave the visiting Cardinals new life after Alexandria had taken a two-goal lead. It is ultimately what allowed Willmar to get out with a win after being outshot 42-20 on the night.
Willmar will move on to the Section 6A semifinals this Saturday against Fergus Falls. Alexandria finished the season 12-12-2 overall.
