Alex boys' basketball: Moorhead, Tech outlasts Cardinals
Slow second halves prove costly for Alexandria.
The Cardinal boys’ basketball team couldn’t get much offense going in the second half of a 57-43 loss against Moorhead on Saturday.
The Cardinals (8-12, 3-9 CLC) trailed by just two at the break but were outscored 29-17 after halftime. Moorhead’s Aaron Lien led the Spuds (15-5) with a game-high 21. Jordan Smith had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Alexandria. John Vogeler added 11 points and Logan Doyle chipped in 10.

St. Cloud Tech 74, Alexandria 56
The Alexandria boys’ basketball team saw a two-point lead at the break disappear last Thursday night in a 74-56 loss to St. Cloud Tech.
The Cardinals led by as much as eight in the first half but couldn’t hold on in the second half. The Tigers exploded for 48 points after halftime to move to 8-4 in the Central Lakes Conference and 12-9 overall.
“The Tigers [made] a couple key runs within the second half that proved to be the difference in the game,” Cardinals head coach Forrest Witt said. “Our ability to contain dribble penetration and dribble drives became nonexistent as we allowed open three-point shots too often.”
Kevin Heysse had 18 points to lead three players in double figures for the Tigers. Andy Foley and Alex Matchinsky each added 13.
Alexandria also had three players finish with double figures. John Vogeler led the way with 14, while Logan Doyle and Austin Storm had 13 and 12, respectively.
