The Alexandria boys’ hockey team went into the first round of last night’s Section 6A playoffs on a two-game winning streak after picking up a 3-2 win over River Lakes in the season finale last Thursday night.
The Cardinals trailed 2-0 after the first period but scored twice late to secure the win. Brock Wood got the game winner by collecting his own rebound and putting it in the back of the net with about a minute remaining. Patrick Leary scored the equalizer a few minutes earlier to dig his team out of the early hole.
River Lakes was outshot 10-8 in the first but led 2-0 where it mattered most. The Stars got goals from Austin Athmann and Tanner Anderson to take a lead into the first intermission. Jack Wensman then cut that lead in half with a goal late in the second period to start Alexandria’s comeback.
Senior Erich Murphy got the start in net for the Cardinals. He got the win by turning aside 20 of the 22 shots he faced.
Alexandria earned the second seed in the 6A playoffs after finishing the regular season 12-11-2. Little Falls (16-9) is the top seed after winning 13 of its last 16 games. The three losses, though, came in the final three games of the regular season.
