Alex gymnastics: Cards post school record at sections
Alexandria fends off Willmar for second place, while Melrose took home the team title.
Tahlia and Briquelle Bowden have been models of consistency for the Alexandria gymnastics team all season and that continued at the Section 6A meet in Melrose on Saturday afternoon.
The Bowdens led the Cardinals to a second place team finish with a school record 141.65 points at the meet. Alexandria held off Willmar, which finished third with a team score of 140.525. Melrose won the event and will head to state after posting a team score of 147.525.
Tahlia and Briquelle will both join them at the state meet to compete individually. Tahlia led the way with the top Alexandria finish in three events and in the all-around where she advanced to state with a score of 36.45. She finished third in the vault (9.375) and on the beam (9.2) and fourth on the floor (9.3). Those top-four finishes helped her advance to state in all three events.
Briquelle will join her there after taking fourth on the bars. She posted a score of 9.025 in the event, leading an Alexandria team that hit all five of its routines on the bars.
“It was definitely a fantastic way to end the [team] season,” head coach Becca Cederberg said. “And we wish lots of luck and confidence to Briquelle and Tahlia as they compete at the state tournament.”
Hannah Wendel added to the depth of the Cardinals by finishing with Alexandria’s second highest scores in three of the four events. Overall, Wendel was seventh on the bars (8.625), fifth on the beam (9.075) and sixth on the floor (9.25). She tied B. Bowden for fifth in the all-around with a score of 35.75.
Alexandria was also recognized for its work in the classroom as the Cardinals added the Academic Gold Award to a second-place trophy in Melrose.
