Area boys' basketball results

The Brandon-Evansville boys’ basketball team overcame a 27-percent shooting night from the field to pick up a 43-31 win over Wheaton-Herman-Norcross on Tuesday night.

The Chargers used a strong defensive effort to stay close after struggling to score in the opening half. They shot just 4-of-27 in the opening 18 minutes and trailed 19-11 at the break after Wheaton connected on a 60-foot shot to beat the buzzer.

“We’re better shooters than that,” head coach John Holsten said of his team’s first-half struggles. “We were confident the kids would make shots. We were taking good shots, and they just weren’t going in.”

The shots did fall at a more consistent pace in the second half. Brandon-Evansville upped its field goal percentage to 40 percent (11-28) after the break. The Chargers scored the first five points after halftime to get back in the game and were able to build a double-digit lead down the stretch.

Their defense allowed them to have a chance in this one. They held the Warriors to just 11-of-46 from the field. Wheaton had the same struggles Brandon-Evansville had in the first half, shooting just 4-of-28 after the break.

“We played pretty well defensively throughout the whole game,” Holsten said. “In the second half, we started making some shots…I think [defense] was the key to it. We’re playing good defense to stay in games. That’s where it starts.”

John Haseman finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Chargers. Zach Hintermeister had six points, 12 rebounds and six assists, and Pat Schaffer (6), Jared Goehringer (6) and Billie Juul (9) combined for 21 points on the night.

“Jared just scored two points in the second half,” Holsten said. “But he was really active offensively and found shots for his teammates.”

The win moved the Chargers to 7-11 overall. They will travel to Fergus Falls tonight, Friday, to take on Hillcrest Lutheran Academy.

In the second half, we continued to play good defense early and made them take some tough shots. However, we did not continue to score on the offensive end.”
