Girls' basketball: Arrows, Panthers, Chargers win, Lakers fall

The Ashby girls improved to 5-12 as they earned a 52-34 win over Rothsay Monday night behind Madison VanSanten and Amber Sundal’s 12 points apiece.

Meg Roley added 10 points and Cassandra Jordan six.

VanSanten and Sundal both had three steals as well.

Jordan had five rebounds, four steals and four assists in the win.

The Arrows were to have hosted Battle Lake last night, Thursday, and will be at Verndale tonight, Friday. Tuesday they will host Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.

ACGC 52, WASKA 45

A three-point shot by Madison Phillips with three minutes remaining tied the game between Minnewaska and Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City at 39 on Monday, but the Laker girls couldn’t muster enough defense and the Falcons went on a run to win 52-45.

Phillips led the Lakers with 14 points, while Sydney Joos added 12. Joos also had seven rebounds and three steals in the game.

BRANDON-EVANSVILLE 56, HENNING 44

The Brandon-Evansville girls’ basketball team bounced back from its toughest loss of the season with one of its best halves of the year against Henning on Monday night.

The Chargers trailed 16-15 at the half before scoring 41 points after the break on their way to a 56-44 win over the Hornets. Heather Strese came back from a five-point performance against Rothsay with 23 points and 18 rebounds. Megan Friedrich added a strong all-around game with 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals, while Tasmine Okerlund poured in 10 points, all in the second half.

Both teams went back and forth throughout much of the night. The Hornets led 25-20 early in the second half before the Chargers went on a 7-2 run to tie the game. Mariah Hansen came off the bench for Brandon-Evansville and hit a big three that tied things up with 12 minutes left.

The Chargers pulled away down the stretch in what was a 45-44 game late. Brandon-Evansville closed things out on an 11-0 run from there to secure the win.

That moved the Chargers to 14-5 on the season. They were scheduled to welcome in Hillcrest Lutheran Academy last night, Thursday, before having a week off until they travel to Battle Lake next Thursday.

PARKERS PRAIRIE 64, BATTLE LAKE 21

The Parkers Prairie girls’ basketball team moved its unbeaten streak to 21 games this season with two more blowouts wins this past week.

The Panthers moved to 11-0 in the Little Eight Conference with a 64-21 win over Battle Lake on Monday, two days after taking care of Wheaton-Herman-Norcross 71-32 behind a triple-double (23 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals) from Micaela Noga.

The Panthers have already wrapped up the LEC title for the third straight season with just one game left in league play. Micaela Noga was again key in the win over the Battlers, leading the way with 22 points, seven steals, six rebounds and four assists. Madison Dorn added 17 points and Kaylee Dorn 12 to help their team run away with things.

Parkers Prairie’s defense continued to dominate opponents. The Panthers held the Battlers to just eight points in the second half and the 21 points for Battle Lake marked the 16th time the Panthers have held an opponent to less than 35 points this season. Teams are averaging just 31.9 points per game against them.

It was the same story against the Warriors as Parkers Prairie led 44-15 at the break and never looked back. Noga’s 23 points were a game high, while M. Dorn and K. Dorn each had 15.
