Alex danceline: Cards' season ends at section competition

The Cardinals finished ninth in jazz and seventh in the high kick division.

The Cardinal dance team saw its season come to an end on Saturday in Sartell at the Section 4AA meet.

Alexandria finished ninth in the jazz competition and seventh in kick out of the 14-team field. The top three teams in each performance move on to the state tournament. Sartell, St. Cloud Cathedral and Sauk Rapids-Rice finished first, second and third in each competition, respectively.

The Cardinals felt good about their performance in the kick after putting together what head coach Christine Reilly called by far their best performance of the season.

“The team executed the routine beautifully,” she said. “It was strong, tight and clean with lots of energy. Their kicks were flying.”

That’s why finding out the results was disappointing for a team that had high hopes after their performance.

“The girls did their job and can hold their heads high knowing that they did their best,” Reilly said. “I am extremely proud of them, and I know that they were proud of their performance. We had hopes of being in the top three or four, and it came as a real shock to find out that we placed seventh.”

Off the dance floor, the Cardinals qualified for the team Academic Excellence Award. A team needs a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher to earn this recognition, and Alexandria finished the season with a team GPA of 3.5.
