The Alexandria boys’ hockey team was just seconds away from a conference win but was forced to settle for a 2-2 tie against St. Cloud Apollo last Thursday night.
The Eagles’ Jared Christen scored the equalizer with just seven seconds left in regulation. Apollo had trouble getting anything past Alexandria’s Ben Allen all night, but scored with a man advantage for the second time on the night after pulling its goalie for an extra attacker.
The Cardinals had led 2-0 before the Eagles mounted their comeback. Charlie Wensman found the back of the net off an assist from Andrew Rentschler with 27 seconds left in the second period.
Alexandria carried that momentum into the third with a shorthanded goal by Jordan Domine. The Cardinals took a checking from behind penalty to give Apollo a five-minute power play, but it was Domine who took a pass from Garrett Skinner and found the back of the net to score a big special teams goal.
The Eagles bounced back with one of their own late in the power play. Dallas Haugen scored with just two seconds left in the man advantage to cut the lead in half. That set the stage for Apollo’s late goal that resulted in Alexandria’s first tie of the season.
“It wasn’t our best performance of the year,” head coach Scott Woods said. “Playing an entire game is still a mystery. The bright side was the fact that we only gave up two goals and each of them had an extra attacker. Ben Allen was the player of the game, making 46 saves on 48 shots.”
