Alex wrestling: Cards fall to Moorhead, Willmar

The Cardinals dropped both matches in their own triangular Thursday night, falling to Moorhead 46-30 and Willmar 52-27.

The Cardinals dropped both matches in their own triangular Thursday night, falling to Moorhead 46-30 and Willmar 52-27.

Tony Hubbard, wrestling at 145 pounds, claimed a big win in his match against state-ranked Seth Pollack of Willmar, shocking the visiting Cardinal by winning 12-7 in overtime. He also pinned his Moorhead opponent in 56 seconds.

“Tony was in control the whole match and ahead in points,” said Alexandria head coach Tom Ellison of Hubbard’s match. “Pollack kept creeping back and finally tied the score up at 7-7 at the end of regulation time.

“Tony didn’t back down as he was able to gain the leverage he was looking for and was able to toss Pollack to his back in the overtime for an impressive 12-7 victory.”

Trent Piepenburg, ranked No. 7 at 106 pounds in Class AAA, and Justin Cumberbatch, ranked No. 9 at 220 pounds in Class AAA, won both of their matches as Piepenburg racked up a pair of pins, both in less than one minute.

Cumberbatch earned a pin against his Moorhead opponent as he moved up to heavyweight and pinned his 220-pound Willmar opponent in less than a minute as well.

“In the Moorhead dual, we lost 46-30 to the Spuds as they used the strength of their upper weight classes to cap off the win,” said Ellison.

Alexandria used the pins from Piepenburg and Hubbard along with the decision victories from Blake Olhausen and Jacob Schiltgen to tie 18-18 with the Spuds after the 145-pound match.

“Then the Spuds took over,” said the coach. “With the score tied at 18, the Spuds reeled off six straight wins.

“We are working short-handed as we have a few wrestlers out with injury,” he added. “Missing those wrestlers had an impact on our chances tonight.”

Willmar won both of its duals, also defeating Moorhead 71-6.
