Alex girls' basketball: Cards outlast Little Falls

Lauren Trumm’s 21-point, seven-assist and eight-steal performance helped the Cardinal girls’ basketball team break out of its two-game slump as Alexandria defeated Little Falls by 10, 62-52, Thursday night in Central Lakes Conference action.

“The Cards were in command the entire game, but just couldn’t seem to ever give the Flyers the knockout punch due to turnovers and missed free throws,” said Alexandria head coach Wendy Kohler. “However, we did some really nice things offensively and defensively as the Flyers battled us tough, led by their standout post player, Whitney Wiese.”

The Cardinals also got 13 points from Amanda Christianson and 10 from Whitney Gesell as they came back from a three-point deficit at the half.

“The coaching staff was pleased with the intensity toward the end of the first half, continuing until the end as we started to get our competitive juices flowing, diving on loose balls, pursuing the boards harder and asserting ourselves defensively,” Kohler said. “This game was about 50-50 balls, [as well as] heart and intensity.”

Cara Wood was the leading rebounder, pulling down eight and dishing out four assists.
