Alex wrestling: Cards fall to Sartell

The Cardinals’ wrestling match with Sartell Thursday night opened and closed with power, but four forfeits in between proved costly as Alexandria fell 46-21.

“There was some great wrestling action in this CLC matchup,” said Alexandria head coach Tom Ellison. “Trent Piepenburg and Blake Olhausen continue to be impressive in our first two weight classes as both picked up wins to start the night out. Tony Hubbard also won his match-up at the 145-pound weight class.

“Mike Schluter filled in a spot on varsity and responded with a solid match against his Sartell opponent and picked up his first varsity win in the Cardinal gym,” he added. “Justin Cumberbatch finished off the scoring by moving up a weight class to heavyweight and pinning his opponent in the second period.”

Piepenburg earned a 7-0 decision at 106 pounds, while Olhausen won by a 14-4 major decision at 113 and Hubbard earned a 20-4 technical fall.

Schluter’s win was a 7-4 decision at 182 pounds before Cumberbatch picked up his pin in 3:13.

The Cardinals will host their triangular with Willmar and Moorhead tomorrow night, Thursday.
