Girls' basketball: Shooting display leads Parkers Prairie over Brandon Evansville
By: Eric Morken, Alexandria Echo Press
The Parkers Prairie girls’ basketball team has saved some of its best shooting displays for Brandon-Evansville and last Thursday night was no different.
On January 28, 2010 the Panthers shot 12-of-17 from three in the first half on their way to a 76-65 win on Brandon-Evansville’s home court. Almost two years later, the Chargers could only watch as Parkers Prairie shot even better from distance in a 76-34 win that moved this team to 16-0 on the season.
The Panthers led 54-22 at the break behind a 13-of-16 shooting performance from behind the arc. Four different Parkers Prairie players had at least three triples in the opening 18 minutes, and leading scorer Micaela Noga wasn’t one of them.
Senior guard Kaylee Dorn led that charge with four threes, scoring all 18 of her points in the opening half. Madison Dorn, Tamara Schmidt and Ally Taylor all had three each for a Panthers team that is showing no signs of slowing down.
“That’s pretty impressive,” Chargers’ head coach Dick Simpson said. “I don’t know if you could make that in a practice…that’s the most impressive shooting exhibition that I’ve seen.”
That’s saying something coming from a coach with more than 500 wins on his resume. The Panthers finished with five different players in double figures. Madison Dorn had 15. Noga chipped in 13, but was more of a distributor on this night with seven assists. Schmidt and Taylor both had 12 points.
The Chargers couldn’t keep up on a night when Parkers Prairie shot 53 percent from the field. Heather Strese was the only Brandon-Evansville player in double figures. She finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Tasmine Okerlund added six points, while Megan Kokett finished with three.
