Card Nordic skiing: Lack of snow doesn't stop Alexandria

The Cardinals made tracks at the Mesabi Invitational

The lack of snow this year required the Mesabi East Invitational to modify its sprint race over the weekend as Giants Ridge had a fast but challenging course.

“It was a fun experience for the Cardinal skiers and featured over 1,000 racers,” said head coach Luke Erickson.

The course ran along a downhill basin on manmade snow for the most part, taking a sharp climb up one of the downhills, and added a second, longer climb.

Pat Flynn and Carl Branch finished 111th and 146th in the boys’ classic division, while Cody Call and Eric Branch were 95th and 145th respectively in the boys’ skate.

In the girls’ classic, Melissa Gromatka was 97th and Lauren Hagstrom 152nd, and in the skate division, Julia Sieling was 68th and Becca Matteer 162nd.
