Card dance: Invitational brings 33 schools to JHS

A total of 33 schools made the 16th annual Cardinal dance team’s invitational its largest ever Saturday, with Alexandria’s kick team finishing eighth and the jazz team ninth.

Both Class A and AA teams – varsity and junior varsity – took to the floor for a full day of competition.

“In kick, the girls came out so strong,” said head coach Christine Reilly. “The team has really improved their kick height and their energy level was fantastic.

“Unfortunately, about halfway through the routine, a series of mistakes seemed to have a domino effect among the team and it brought the energy level down as well.

“They fought their way through it and finished strong, but there were just too many mistakes and it really hurt their scores,” she added. “The teams placing fourth through eighth were tight, just 20 points (out of a possible 500) separating the five teams.”

Sartell won both the varsity kick and jazz titles in Class AA, with Sauk Rapids second in both events.

“The team had a good performance,” said Reilly of her jazz squad. “Their jazz routine and skills continue to improve.”

Alexandria’s JV kick team was sixth and the jazz team was third.

“The girls had good performances in each division,” Reilly noted. “For the JV jazz team, it was their first time competing with [the routine] for the season.”
