Card boys' hockey: Alexandria is runner-up at Roseau tournament

The Alexandria boys’ hockey team came home with a second-place finish after traveling to the Roseau Holiday Classic last week.

The Cardinals came up short against the host Rams in a 5-1 loss in the finals. They got to that point with a 2-1 win over Chisago Lakes in the semifinals and a 5-1 win over Lake of the Woods in the opening rounds.

Roseau took a 2-0 lead in the finals before Jordan Domine scored Alexandria’s only goal of the game 2:25 into the second period. The Rams added one more in the second to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission. They then put the game away with two more in the third.

Roseau outshot the Cardinals 46-27 on the night. Ben Allen stopped 41 shots as he took the loss in net.

Erich Murphy got the start in net against Chisago Lakes and was 24 seconds away from a shutout. He was perfect before giving up a late goal in the third as he stopped 34 of 35 shots to lead his team into the tournament final.

Domine gave him some offense to work with after a goal early in the first period. He scored less than three minutes in off assists from Charlie Wensman and Garrett Skinner. Skinner then added a goal of his own late in the second to give Alexandria a 2-0 lead that would hold up.

The Cardinals won their opening round game against Lake of the Woods behind a dominant third period.

Alexandria and Lake of the Woods went into the third tied at one apiece before Garrett Skinner helped the Cardinals pull away. Skinner scored back-to-back goals in the first four minutes of the final frame to give his team a lead it would not relinquish. Tom Schmidt and Jack Wensman added insurance goals to end the team’s two-game losing skid.

Bryce Miller gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead midway through the second period. He connected off assists from Charlie Wensman and Christian Canavati before Victor Dahl tied things up a few minutes later for Lake of the Woods.

Ben Allen got the win in net for Alexandria. He turned aside 23 of the 24 shots he faced.
