Card girls' basketball: Alexandria grabs own holiday tournament

The Cardinals defeated Moorhead, Armstrong for the championship

The Cardinal girls’ basketball team kept their own holiday tournament trophy at home, defeating Robbinsdale Armstrong in the championship game 47-37 Friday, one day after defeating Moorhead.

The Spuds of Moorhead won the consolation championship as they topped Marshall 57-50. The Tigers had fallen to Armstrong 67-56 in the first round of tournament play.

“The Cards came out determined to grind out a victory, if necessary, as the Falcons featured some sharp-shooters and up-temp style of play,” said head coach Wendy Kohler. “We did just that as both teams struggled to score against each team’s efficient defensive intensity. At the end of the day, it was our clock management, ability to hit the clutch shot, and sealing the deal with key free throws that preserved the win for the Cards.

Lauren Trumm led the scoring with 21, while Amanda Christianson and Kalli Bowser added 10 each. Cara Wood added four and Whitney Gesell two.

Bowser also had a double-double night as she pulled down 10 rebounds. Wood had five assists, with Gesell and Trumm picking up five and four steals, respectively.

The win upped Alexandria’s record to 7-1.

Named to the all-tournament team were Trumm, Christianson and Bowser of Alexandria, Ally Gove and Emily Jacobson of Robbinsdale Armstrong, and Katie Rosenfeldt of Moorhead.
