Minutes after his first round loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 at the MGM_Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Friday night, Alexandria's Brock Lesnar announced his retirement.
Lesnar, who has struggled with serious bouts of diverticulitis for the past two years, announced his decision at the post-fight press conference.
"I promised my wife and kids if I won this fight that I would get a title shot and then that one would be the last one," an emotional Lesnar said after the fight. "If I lost tonight..." he added before stopping short.
The former Minnesota Gopher wrestler, who returned after a 14-month absence, had his bout come to an end at 2:26 of the first round of the heavyweight fight.
"I've had a really difficult couple of years with my disease," he said. "And I'm going to officially say this is going to be the last time you'll see me in the octagon."
The former heavyweight champion finished his UFC career with a 5-3 overall record and as one of the biggest pay-per view draws in the sport's history.
