Shirley Elmer, 76, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2011 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley Elmer, 76, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2011 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley Marlene Fedje was born near Evansville on August 20, 1935, the daughter of Hildor and Emma (Underdahl) Fedje. She grew up on the family farm with her brother Harley. She was confirmed in the Christian faith at Our Savior's Lutheran Church and graduated from Evansville High School. Throughout her life, she spoke fondly of growing up on the family farm.

On August 22, 1953, Shirley was united in marriage to Don Elmer. The couple lived in Evansville and worked in Clarence Elmer's hatchery business. Shirley and Don started their own business, the local bowling alley, in 1960. Over the next 38 years, Shirley worked in the business as it expanded to include a lounge, dance hall and bus service. She also drove school bus for nearly 30 years and worked at Crestview Nursing Home.

Shirley was a beloved bus driver and kept the many kind notes she received from parents and kids over the years. Shirley was a stellar bowler, loved dancing, and enjoyed watching sports, especially basketball and baseball. Most of all, Shirley enjoyed having her three children with her at the bowling alley throughout the day. Her children and grandchildren were Shirley's pride and joy throughout her life.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Don Elmer, of Evansville; three sons, Todd (Kathy) Elmer of Evansville, Corey (Brenda) Elmer of Moorhead, and Darcy (Leanne) Elmer of Rochester. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Christian Elmer (10), Jack Elmer (8) and Blake Elmer (4) of Moorhead. and Cameron Elmer (2) and Claudia Elmer (2) of Rochester.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Harley Fedje.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 30 at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Evansville. Burial will follow at Mound Grove Cemetery in Evansville.

Visitation is Thursday, December 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
