The Small Mall event was developed last year by Pastor Mick Murphy from Calvary Covenant Church in Evansville and Sara Evanson, youth pastor for the Evansville churches.

It was designed to teach children the importance of giving to others.

The gifts that the community donated last year were so abundant that Sharon Henneman of Evansville offered to bring the Small Mall to Alexandria with the surplus of gifts.

Parents were invited to bring their children, ages 3 through 6th grade to the 6th Avenue Community Center in Alexandria on Monday and Tuesday, December 12 and 13. Parents were encouraged to have their children earn a dollar by performing a task or chore prior to the event.

At the event, children used their dollar to purchase Christmas gifts for their family.

Parents had the opportunity to sit down and relax as volunteers took the children to the gift room to help them select an appropriate gift for everyone on the child’s list.

Children participated in wrapping the gifts with the help of volunteers.

The cost of the gifts available to the children began at 25 cents for the first gift, 10 cents for the second and 5 cents for all others.

More than 300 children participated in the Small Mall by purchasing more than 700 Christmas gifts for their family.

All money collected from the event will be used for gifts for children in Haiti.
