One goal separated a pair of Cardinal teams Tuesday night at the Runestone Community Center as Alexandria edged Willmar 3-2 in Central Lakes Conference girls’ hockey action and gave Alexandria its fourth win in five games.

That win improved Alexandria’s league record to 3-2-0 and overall mark to 4-7-0, while Willmar fell to 1-2-2 in CLC action and 5-4-2 overall.

Danielle Carlson scored the only goal of the first period on an assist by Britni DelCastillo, giving the Cardinals an edge that would prove crucial.

“About halfway through the second period, Shelby Iverson scored an ESPN-quality power play goal,” said head coach Andy Shriver. “The Cardinal power play unit snapped the puck around the horn with a series of lightning quick one-touch passes.

“As Kalley Kragenbring worked the puck down to Shanee Herd, Iverson found a seam on the weak side of the ice,” he added. “Herd rifled the pass before the defense could adjust and Iverson drilled a slap-shot on the fly, into the back of the net. A great team goal.”

Down by a pair of goals, Willmar ratcheted up its offense, scoring two goals in the following minute to tie the score.

But Iverson came through for Alexandria, closing out the second period with a goal on an assist from Becca Illies to give the host Cardinals a 3-2 lead heading to the locker room.

“Alexandria sealed the victory with solid play, great penalty killing and a 14-4 shot advantage in the third period,” said Shriver.

Steph Drown had 14 saves on the day.

Alexandria will be at the St. Cloud Icebreakers next Tuesday and will host Hopkins next Thursday.
