Eleven Cardinal swimmers made it through Friday’s preliminary round of the Section 6A swimming and diving championships at the University of Minnesota-Morrs, but couldn’t advance any athletes to the State Class A meet as the team finished seventh.

That seventh place finish for the Cards was one better than last season’s finish, while defending champion Sartell-St. Stephen was successful in re-taking the 6A crown.

“The contest produced seven new section records,” said Alexandria head coach Mark Storhaug, “two each by Sartell’s Marisa Wood (200 free, 500 free) and Ellen Bloom (200 IM, 100 back), two by Little Falls’ Whitney Weisz (50 free, 100 free) and one from St. Cloud Cathedral’s Maddy Pesch (100 breaststroke).”

Three of Alexandria’s relays advanced to the top eight as the 200 medley relay team of Kalli Bowser, Megan Bristow, Madalyn Winger and Beth Burnham finished fifth, the 200 free team of Bristow, Caroline Roers, Burnham and Rachel Peterson were seventh, and the 400 free relay team of Bowser, Kate LeBrasseur, Winger and Peterson were seventh.

“Individually, Madalyn Winger finaled twice, finishing seventh and medaling in the 200 IM, while also placing 12th in the 100 fly,” said Storhaug. “Kate LeBrassuer posted an 11th in the 200 IM and was 15th in the 100 back.

“Hannah Eklund was 13th in the 200 IM and medaled with a seventh place finish in the breaststroke,” he added. “Rachel Peterson took 13th in the 500 free and 10th in the 100 free. Kalli Bowser was 10th in the 100 back, while Megan Bristow medaled by finishing fifth in the 100 breaststroke.”

Alexandria had 21 season best times out of the 29 swims, including two each from Roers, LeBrasseur, Eklund, Peterson and Bowser.

“Some of the biggest improvements came from Winger, Eklund, Burnham, Hannah Lindgren, Ally Timm and Bailey Serum,” said Storhaug.

Alexandria will hold its end of the season banquet on Monday, November 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Discovery Middle School cafeteria.
