Minnewaska football: Missed extra point costly for Lakers in 5AA loss

Minnewaska and Eden Valley-Watkins both learned just how important extra point kicks can be in a game Tuesday night as the Lakers pushed the second-seeded Eagles to overtime before falling 34-33 in Section 5AA football playoffs Tuesday night after missing their final attempt.

In all, the two teams missed four extra point attempts, with three of those on Minnewaska’s side. And, in only one instance was Minnewaska able to make up points as the Lakers were successful on a two-point conversion pass in the second quarter.

Minnewaska trailed 14-6 after the first quarter, and were down by a touchdown at the half, but scored 13 unanswered points in the third quarter to take the lead.

The Eagles tied the game in the fourth as Austin Pelkey snatched a 78-yard pass out of the air, but Eden Valley-Watkins missed its extra point attempt for the win in regulation.

Minnewaska finished the season without a win at 0-9.
