Crystal Dey is the newest addition to the Echo Press editorial staff.
Dey, who has lived all over the U.S., will work as a reporter for the local newspaper.
She’s been on the job for a little over a week and, so far, she said, “I haven’t explored the area as much as I’d like to yet. There are a lot of cute shops on Broadway. I noticed a real community feel to the area as I was checking out downtown. Alexandria is a lot bigger than I thought it would be based on population.”
Dey attended Hibbing Community College and transferred to Minnesota State University Moorhead where she majored in mass communications with an emphasis in online journalism.
During her career, she has worked as an assistant copy editor at Penny Publications in Milford, Connecticut and customer service representative in the obituary and legal notice department at the Hartford Courant.
She recently worked as a community engagement editor for West Hartford News in Connecticut.
“Now that I’m back in Minnesota, I want to do all the things I took for granted before. I’ve only been skiing twice and I want to try snow-boarding. Ice skating on a real pond is high on my list. I’m anxious to see the transition when tourist season starts up. I definitely have to check out the museums and get cued in on the arts scene. I think I’m going to be pretty busy,” Dey said.
As a reporter for the Echo Press, Dey will cover a variety of events, write news articles, shoot photos and help keep the newspaper’s website current.
During her time off, Dey said she enjoys reading, writing poetry and visiting museums.
She added, “I started a genealogy project last winter, which is ongoing and will probably never be finished. I have a huge interest in history, though I’m no buff, and like to visit any kind of museum. Vampires – I’m a little bit obsessed with The Vampire Diaries and I go through phases where I research the myth and lore surrounding them.”
