Alexandria’s Grant Becker wasn’t about to let Fergus Falls come onto the Lincoln Soccer Field and steal one on the Cardinals’ home turf in the opening round of the Section 8A playoffs.
The junior midfielder got the first two goals of the night for his team as Alexandria coasted to a 3-0 win over the sixth-seeded Otters. The Cardinals came out of the gate with a lot of energy that kept Fergus Falls on its heels.
That aggression paid off on Alexandria’s third corner kick of the game. Peter Olson sent a curving ball toward the far post that Becker went up above the crowd to get before heading it in for a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.
The Cardinals took that narrow lead into the break before coming out strong in the second. Alexandria continued to control the pace of the game as Becker was rewarded with his second goal of the night. He took a pass on the wing and blasted it past the Otters’ keeper from an angle to make it 2-0.
Fergus Falls could never recover after that. The Cardinals continued to apply pressure before junior varsity call up Nicholas Heseltine scored just 20 seconds after subbing into the game. He received a pass before putting the finishing touches on the win for Alexandria.
“The guys came out ready to play,” head coach Dave Vinje said, “and kept the pressure on the Otters’ defense the majority of the game.”
The Cardinals moved to 2-0 against their Central Lakes Conference rivals on the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Zack Lamb earned the shutout in net for Alexandria.
