The annual Child Care Conference, Caring for Kids and Those Who Care, will be held Saturday, October 15 at the Alexandria Technical and Community College.

The keynote speaker is Erin Walsh from the SEARCH Institute. Her keynote will focus on Jolts and Tricks, Unpacking the Power of Media. Walsh has worked with the National Institute of Media and the Family.

The keynote will address the power of media on our culture and how the forces that drive media content don’t always have the best interest of our families and communities in mind. She will combine the latest discoveries in brain science with research and data to explore how media shapes attitudes and behaviors. She will also have a breakout session entitled, Are We Creating a Culture of Disrespect? Values and Attitudes in the Media.

Three other breakout sessions will provide opportunities to address the areas of literacy planning for preschoolers, by the Fishing Pond in Waite Park; an introduction to American Sign Language by an ATCC sign language instructor; and an Overview of Teach Child Interaction Training (TCIT), a model of techniques for strengthening positive relationships with children, effective ways of responding to their aggression, noncompliance and disruptive behaviors by instructors from District 206.

Vendor shopping will be available during breaks and lunchtime.

For further information and/or to register, contact the Alexandria Technical and Community College at (320) 762-4510 or 1-888-234-1313. Registration includes materials, continental breakfast, lunch and a six-hour certificate. Registration must be postmarked by October 7 to alleviate a late fee.
