Card boys' cross country: Alexandria third at Fergus Falls

    Contributed Will Sieling was fourth overall during the John Hermes Invitational last Thursday as the Cardinal boys finished third overall.

Windy conditions made it difficult to run fast times at the John Hermes Invitational cross country meet Thursday, leaving the Cardinal boys finishing third to Bemidji and Detroit Lakes.

“We did not have a single boy run a season best time,” said head coach Mark Nelsen. “They did, however, race hard and made the best of the conditions.

“It was good to see Will Sieling racing better as he has been battling an upper respiratory condition for the past couple of weeks.”

Sieling finished fourth overall with a time of 17:14.2, just behind teammate Zac Bartolomeo, who was third in 17:11.8.

“Zac Bartolomeo raced well and was only 14 seconds off his best effort of the season, but 19 seconds faster than a year ago,” said Nelsen.

Jimmy Lovrien finished eighth in 17:43.6, Trent Piepenburg 35th in 18:39.9, Colton Sailor 43rd in 18:59.0, Austin Thom 47th in 19:03.6 and Brandon Jerde in 55th in 19:16.9.

“The greatest challenge for our boys’ varsity will be to shrink the gap from our number one runner to our fourth and seventh runner,” said the coach. “Ideally, we would like to get our 1-5 gap close to a minute. Our best at this point of the season as been 1:36, while we were 1:48 at Fergus Falls.”

Earning runner of the meet honors for varsity was Bartolomeo.
