Card boys' cross country: Redbirds run to fourth at Rocori Invite
Zac Bartolomeo paced the Card boys
It was a good race for the Cardinal boys’ cross country team, but with powerhouse Moorhead taking five of the top six spots, Alexandria had to settle for fourth.
“[The] Moorhead boys demonstrated why they are the top team in the section, dominating the competition with 19 points,” said Cardinal head coach Mark Nelsen. “Our boys’ varsity and junior varsity raced well, and the coaches were very pleased with the improvement of our younger runners.
“Jimmy Lovrien had his best race of the season and was our lone varsity runner to have a season best time,” he added.
“It was good to see Zac Bartolomeo was off the line with the leaders. He struggled a little in the middle of the race, but had a solid finish.”
Bartolomeo stayed with the leaders, picking up a ninth place finish, while Lovrien was 12th, Will Sieling 13th, Trent Piepenburg 31st, Colton Sailor 38th and Austin Thom 39th.
“Senior Austin Storm looked very strong through the 3,200-meter mark,” he said. “We are hopeful that his fitness level continues to improve and will be able to race at that tempo the entire race.
“Brandon Jerde missed our last race at Little Falls, but returned this week with a very good race in the JV meet, and earned a spot back on our varsity.”
Lovrien earned runner of the meet honors on the varsity level for the Cardinals.
