Anita Dittman, an 84-year-old Holocaust survivor, will speak at West Moe Lutheran Church of Brandon Sunday, September 25 at 9 a.m.
Dittman was a Jewish child in Germany during the 1930s and 40s and was 5 years old when Hitler came into power. Her family was torn apart by war and faced persecution and extreme poverty.
Dittman spent 12 years in Nazi Germany. She and her mother were placed in different concentration camps during World War II. They both survived the brutal conditions and hard manual labor. She was reunited with her mother and the two came to the U.S. in 1946.
Though born and raised in the Jewish faith, a childhood friend introduced Dittman to Christianity.
“My faith is the only thing that kept me alive through those times,” said Dittman. “Faith is the most important thing. If we have faith, we have everything.”
Dittman wrote a book about her experiences in Nazi Germany and now lives in Crosby.
West Moe Church is located 10 miles west of Alexandria on County Road 8.
