A campaign to end abortion through prayer, fasting and community outreach has come to Alexandria.

The campaign, known nationally as 40 Days for Life, has been adopted by the leadership of several area churches as a way to intervene on what many Christians see as an ongoing national tragedy.

40 Days for Life takes a peaceful approach to showing communities the consequences of abortion in their neighborhoods.

Hundreds of volunteers from area churches have organized together to hold a 40-day prayer vigil outside of the local Planned Parenthood office. Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of abortions in the U. S.

The vigil will take place Wednesday, September 28 through Sunday, November 6.

An event kick-off will be held Sunday, September 25 at 6:30 p.m. at New Life Christian Church in Alexandria, featuring Pastor Peter Reishus, New Testament Church; Father Fred Fink representing St. Mary’s Catholic Church and area parishes; Pastor Noel Rich, Evangelical Covenant Church; Pastor Mike Bartolomeo, Church for the Harvest; Pastor Lynndene Way of House of Prayer; Dane Compton, retired Missouri Synod Lutheran pastor; and Pastor John Taplin, New Life Christian Church.

Courtney Wosepka, a Jefferson High School student, will sing; refreshments will be served.
