Region 14C baseball: Osakis Hawks' season ends

The Osakis Hawks saw their baseball season come to an end in the Region 16C playoffs last weekend.

In the opening round, the Hawks picked up a 3-1 win over the Cass Lake Reds, then fell in Saturday’s action to Pelican Rapids 21-4.

They ended their season as they dropped to Vergas 3-0 on Sunday.

Osakis scored runs in the second, fifth and eighth innings to back up a five-hit, one-run performance on the mound by Nick Petro.

Doug Zimmel scored the first run of the game for the Hawks as he reached on a single, then advanced around the bases on a pair of singles.

The team added the second run as Matt Laven singled, then moved around on a sacrifice bunt and a single by Ben Anderson.

Their final run scored in the top of the eighth when Laven was hit by a pitch, then moved around on a wild pitch and an error, then scored on a balk.

Saturday’s game was a tough one as the Hawks fell to Pelican Rapids 21-4.

Four pitchers took the mound for Osakis in hopes of plugging the leaks, but gave up a total of 16 hits. Derek Waldvogel took the loss.

Osakis scored twice in the third inning as Chad Zimmels’ triple scored Anderson, and Zimmel then scored as the Pelican Rapids pitcher issued three straight walks to bring him in.

In the fourth, a walk to Anderson brought home Laven, who opened the frame with a single. Todd Berberich scored as Doug Zimmel grounded out to second.

The Hawks finished up their season on Sunday as they fell to Vergas 3-0.

Lavin was tagged with the loss as he went the full eight innings, giving up 12 hits.

Osakis was unable to capitalize on any of its four hits or four walks.
