4-H'ers earn honors in food review and demonstration project areas

Douglas County 4-H’ers in the Food Review and Demonstrations project areas had their projects judged on Friday, July 15.

Douglas County 4-H’ers in the Food Review and Demonstrations project areas had their projects judged on Friday, July 15.

Food Review and Demonstrations are public presentations where youth develop self confidence, express their ideas clearly, acquire subject matter knowledge and share that knowledge with others, thereby educating their audience.

Public presentations are an effective method for teaching concepts and problem solving procedures. A good presentation should lead to increased attentiveness learning and performance.

FOOD REVIEW

Food Review participants are required to design a menu and place setting, and bring one food item from the menu, as well as the place setting and centerpiece.

Participants are evaluated on their presentation of the place setting, knowledge of the nutritional value of their meals and their interview.

RESULTS

Participants were Lauren Engebretson of Alexandria and Megen Way of Garfield (Chippewans); Rebecca Mateer of Alexandria, Shaun Mateer and Natalie Barten of Alexandria (GoBees); Rachel Kokett of Alexandria (Liberty Livewires).

All participants earned blue ribbons.

Grand Champion in the 9th grade and above division – Megen Way.

Reserve Champion 9th grade and above – Lauren Engebretson.

Honorable Mention 9th grade and above – Brittany Mattocks.

Grand Champion grades 6-8 – Rebecca Mateer.

Reserve Champion grades 6-8 – Natalie Barten.

Grand Champion grades 3-5 – Shaun Mateer.

Reserve Champion grades 3-5 – Rachel Kokett.

DEMONSTRATIONS

Three demonstrations and one team illustrated presentation were given on topics of choice.

These public presentations included topics such as how to make paper out of recycled materials and all about dirt bikes.

Youth are evaluated on ability to communicate their information, proper use of visuals, correct use of introduction, body and conclusion in their demonstration, and also the ability to answer questions.

RESULTS

Participants included Eric Branch of Alexandria, Carl Branch of Alexandria, Shaun Mateer of Alexandria and Rebecca Mateer of Alexandria (GoBees); Madison Floden of Carlos (Hoofbeats).

Grand Champion grades 6-8 – Eric and Carl Branch.

Reserve Champion grades 6-8 – Rebecca Mateer.

Grand Champion grades 3-5 – Shaun Mateer.

Reserve Champion grades 3-5 – Madison Floden.
