Two-time champion Tim Peterson of Lino Lakes had to get some breaks over the final three holes to secure the Men’s Executive Division title on Saturday.
Down two with those three to go, Peterson dug deep and got a little help from Woodbury’s Eric Heimsness to earn the 2011 crown 1-up. Peterson started his rally with a birdie win on No. 16. He then took Nos. 17 and 18 with pars to earn a dramatic victory. His lead after 18 holes was the only lead he held all day.
“Eric was playing good until the last part of the match,” Peterson said. “I just tried to keep the pressure on by making pars and eventually that was good enough.”
Vangsness jumped out early but could never create much distance throughout the afternoon. His birdie wins on Nos. 1 and 3 gave him a 2-up lead before Peterson answered with a birdie win on No. 6. The two players would exchange wins over the next two holes as Heimsness took a 1-up lead into the turn.
Peterson tied it after a win on 11 before Heimsness grabbed the lead again on 13. A par there and a birdie win on 15 gave him his 2-hole lead with just three to go.
Peterson got the birdie win on the 16th to apply the pressure. He would need a little help over the final two holes, and he got it. Heimsness’ bogeys on Nos. 17 and 18 opened the door, and Peterson was happy to take advantage for his third Executive Men’s title and his first since 2003.
Peterson got to the finals with a 3-2 win over St. Cloud’s Darryl Schomer earlier in the day, while Heimsness beat defending champion Jon Freeman of Chanhassen, 2-1 in the semis.
Heimsness took an early lead over Freeman and never trailed in his morning match. Par wins on Nos. 1 and 3 and a birdie win on 4 gave him a 3-up lead. Freeman answered with his first win of the day on 8 but trailed by three holes heading into No. 14.
He rallied for consecutive wins over the next two holes but a par win for Heimsness on 16 extended his lead back to two. Both players parred the 17th to end things early.
