Resorters Golf Tournament: Kvidera is Women's Division champion

Ramsey golfer takes it all in first tourney appearance

First-time Resorters Golf Tournament competitor Emily Kvidera of Ramsey had to battle her way past a pair of two-time champions to claim the 2011 Women’s Division crown Saturday at the Alexandria Golf Club.

Kvidera, a member of the Augustana women’s golf team along with Alexandria’s Maggie Leland, is a veteran of high-profile golf, having led her Vikings team to ninth place in the Division II NCAA championship last spring.

The Augustana golfer had to defeat her teammate, the 2007 and 2009 champ, along the way to her title, and toughed it out in the title match 2-1 against Resorters veteran Betsy Aldrich of St. Louis Park, who was the champion in 2003 and 2008.

Aldrich, this year’s medalist, is also in good stead in the Minnesota golfing ranks, having finished second in the women’s state amateur four-ball competition this year, as well as having won the title along with Ede Rice in 2006.

Along with Leland and Aldrich, Kvidera faced Jen Cavers of Alexandria and Bridget Cummings of Chaska, while Aldrich got past Jessica Nelson of Alexandria, Heidi Beckendorf of Blaine and Amanda Woodhull of Minnetonka to secure her spot in the championship.

Par golf proved to be the deciding factor in the 2011 championship and both golfers had their share of them.

Kvidera opened the finals with a par win on No. 1 to take a 1-up lead, and both she and Aldrich were steady through the next three holes, matching each other shot for shot.

On the fifth hole, Alrich had her opportunity to tie the match, using a par to do it, but Kvidera rebounded on No. 6 with the only birdie of the round to regain the lead.

At No. 8, Aldrich took advantage of a par to win that hole and once again even the contest. The two then bogeyed the final hole on the front nine, leaving the match tied at the turn.

Again a par proved to be key as Kvidera earned a win on No. 11 and again on No. 13 to take a 2-up lead.

Following two bogey holes by both players, both Kvidera and Aldrich shot par on Nos. 16 and 17 to leave the Ramsey golfer up by two with one hole to play, giving her the trophy in the 90th Resorters tournament.

Kvidera, who was invited to play in the tournament by the Leland family, plans to return to defend her title next summer.
