Resorters Golf Tournament: Heinen claims second title in Junior Division
Edmond, Oklahoma’s Nick Heinen wasn’t going to let anyone take away his second Resorters title on Saturday.
A year after being bounced early in the tournament as he tried to defend his 2009 Junior Division crown, Heinen capped off his run through the Junior 13-15 Division with a 4-2 win over Alexandria’s Cole Haugen.
Heinen went out and took the title in the end. He birdied three straight on Nos. 14, 15 and 16 to turn what was a 1-up lead into an early win.
Haugen applied pressure through most of the day but could never get over the hump. A birdie win on No. 6 cut his deficit to one, but Heinen answered with a par win on 7. Another birdie for Haugen on 8 set the two just one apart as they went into the turn.
Haugen pulled even once they got there. A bogey win on 10 gave him new life, but it only sent a wake-up call to Heinen. He was lights out over the final six holes. He shot 5-under during that span, adding birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 with a par on 13 before he put things away with the three straight birdies.
