Resorters Golf Tournament: Empanger claims third Senior title

Jon Empanger was back in a familiar spot on Saturday evening, hoisting another Resorters trophy after all was said and done in Senior Division play.
The Chaska golfer’s reign over the field has been well documented over the past 10 years. He added to that legacy with a 3-2 win over Alexandria’s Bill Freeman in the championship match. It was his fifth straight Resorters title (2009-2011 Senior titles, 2007-2008 Executive championships) and his eighth overall.
“I really play well up here,” Empanger said. “I don’t really understand it, but when I come up here, I find my game.”
Freeman stuck with him as well as any opponent this year but was never able to grab a lead in this one. Empanger jumped out right away, winning No. 1 with a birdie. He went on to take No. 3 with a par before the two players halved the next five holes. Freeman struck right before the turn with a par win that cut his deficit to one heading onto the back.
That momentum did not last long once they got there. Empanger grabbed a 2-up lead with a par win on 10 before both players birdied the 11th. Empanger followed that with another birdie, this time on the par-5 12th to take a 3-up lead. That is how the two would remain after halving the next four holes with pars.
Empanger shot 2-under on the day to take his eighth title. In addition to his five straight Resorters crowns, he also added Executive Division championships in 1993, 1997 and 2004.
