Resorters golf: Barge, Berry share Pro-Am title

Two golf pros with a combined 12 Resorters Pro-Am titles to their names can add one more each as Mike Barge and Don Berry kicked off the 2011 Resorters Tournament by tying for first at the Alexandria Golf Club on Sunday.

Barge, last year’s champion from the Hazeltine Golf Club, and Berry of Edinburg USA both shot 69 to finish one shot ahead of Brian Riner of Dick’s Sporting Goods and Herbie Champlin of the Dallas Country Club.

Berry got off to a strong start with back-to-back birdies on six and seven. He bogeyed No. 9 to go into the turn at one under. He was even better on the back, birdying Nos. 12, 15 and 16. His only blemish came on 18 with a bogey.

That was enough to put Barge into a tie. He rebounded from a bogey on No. 1 to shoot one-under on the front. Barge then went two-under on the back with birdies on Nos. 11, 12 and 13.

It marked the eighth time Berry has earned at least a share of the Resorters Pro-Am title and the sixth time for Barge. It was also the second time these two shared the title after tying back in 2001.

Alexandria head pro Ron Rebrovich was not far off the pace. He shot a 71 after going into the turn at one-under. Alexandria assistant golf professional Grant Hanson shot a 76. He bounced back from a 40 on the front to shoot even par on the back.
