Book lovers and bargain hunters take note: The Douglas County Friends of the Library’s annual used book sale is almost here!

This year’s sale will take place at the National Guard Armory, 311 Broadway in Alexandria on Thursday, August 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The $3 bag sale will begin at 5 p.m.

The sale will include thousands of titles, fiction and nonfiction, for all ages in paperback, hardcover and audio books. The sale will also feature movies and Life magazines dating back to 1936.

Donations will be accepted through Friday, July 29 (no magazines, textbooks or musty/mildewed items, please).

Proceeds from the sale fund numerous library programs and help purchase materials and equipment for the Douglas County Library. During the past year, the Friends of the Library group has funded two author visits, planned the first Alexandria Area Community Read, funded the Baby Reader Project that provides a first book to every baby born at the Douglas County Hospital, purchased two study carrels for the library lobby, funded the library’s summer reading program for children, donated funds to purchase audio/video materials for the library and donated funds to the tornado-stricken Wadena/Deer Creek High School for materials.

“The annual used book sale is by far our biggest fund raising effort,” stated Priscilla Reineke, chairperson of this year’s used book sale. “We appreciate the hundreds of community residents who have donated books throughout the year and the large number of volunteers working behind the scenes to make this event a great success.”

Partial matching funds from proceeds of the sale are being awarded by Douglas County Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
