Alexandria Legion: District play is up nextAlexandria prepares for playoffs after loss
The Post 87 Legion baseball team will have to rebound from a 12-3 loss heading into the District 7 tournament tomorrow after falling to Fergus Falls in the regular-season finale.
Alexandria fell behind early and could never climb out of that hole. Fergus led 6-3 in the eighth before putting together six runs to run away with the win.
Post 87 had to use five different pitchers in the game as they struggled to find the strike zone. Alexandria pitchers issued 11 free passes, while the defense committed four errors behind them.
“Sometimes the bats will get cold,” head coach Kevin Engebretson said. “But you can always pitch and play defense. Our guys have got to do a better job overall of throwing strikes and making the plays behind our pitchers. As coaches and players, we know those two things go hand in hand.”
AJ Anderson started on the mound and went just two innings. He took the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit and five walks. Beau Backhaus, Nick Knoblach, Nate Nelson and Parker Giroux worked behind him to close out the game.
Alexandria got just five hits in the game. Dalton Leuschke went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Jordan Domine added an RBI single, as well.
Post 87 will try to put this game to bed and regroup for the District 7 tournament. Alexandria hosts the three-day event, which starts tomorrow, Thursday, and wraps up on Saturday.
Alexandria was expecting to be the third seed and taking on second-seeded Marshall at 4 p.m. tomorrow. Top-seeded Willmar would take on fourth-seeded Litchfield in the first game of the day at 1 p.m.
The winners of those two games will meet at 1 p.m. on Friday. The losers of the opening round games will square off at 7 p.m. on Thursday with a chance to stay alive in the loser’s bracket. The championship game will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday with a game two following that if necessary.
