Cardinal softball: Team recognizes 2011 players

The Alexandria softball team recognized the players responsible for helping this team to another winning season at its season ending awards banquet on June 14.

Lauren Trumm was named the team’s best offensive player. It was really no contest when looking at the stats.

The junior catcher led her team in every major offensive category. She finished first in hits (31), RBIs (27), batting average (.492), on-base percentage (.600), slugging percentage (.841), runs scored (25) and triples (6).

That made her an easy selection as one of four Alexandria players named to the All-Central Lakes Conference team. Danielle Carlson, Jess Syvrud and Taylor Ellingson were also named to the team. Seniors Bri Ebert and Sam Brown were honorable-mention selections.

Carlson was named the Cardinals’ best defensive player. The sophomore anchored the defense up the middle by solidifying the shortstop position after Gracie Bruzek graduated in 2010.

The Most Improved Player Award went to two freshmen. Sarah Bruzek and Emily Kuennen shared that honor after Bruzek hit .368 and Kuennen hit .271 and helped lead a young pitching staff behind Ellingson.

Brown took home the Coach’s Award for her role in leading this team. Her senior teammate, Ebert, was also honored at the banquet after earning the Coach’s Association Senior Academic Award, which recognized seniors who hold a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

The Cardinals finished the year 12-7 and 9-5 in the Central Lakes Conference. They will return nine of the 11 players on their roster from this season.
