State Trap Shoot: Alex shooters get high marks

The Alexandria Shooting Park hosted the 2011 state tournament

The Alexandria Shooting Park was packed again this year as the best trap shooters in the state and others from across the country convened for the 2011 Minnesota State Trap Shoot from July 5-10.

The six-day event kicked off with the Youth Day on July 5 as members of the Alexandria Shooting Park took second in the Junior High Division. Andrew Rentschler kicked off a successful week for him by busting a team-high 95 clays. Cody Lund (90), William Schroeder (88), Patrick McGaffey (86) and Christian McGaffey (82) teamed up with him to score a total of 441, seven shots off the winning team from the Crow River Sportsmans Club.

Rentschler went on to solidify himself as one of the top young shooters at the event. He was the high sub-junior in the Eric Munson and Shamrock Leathers Doubles competition last Wednesday before taking the same category in the Class Doubles event a day later. Rentschler wrapped up his week by finishing as the sub-junior runner-up in the doubles championship after busting 89 clays on July 8.

Plenty other local shooters left their mark on the competition, as well. Alexandria’s Larry Ledum was the high veteran after busting 100 clays in the Neumann and Gander Mountain Singles competition on Wednesday. Glenwood’s Jennie Stone was the high lady in Class II in the same competition.

Duane Bahn of Alexandria was the high veteran in the Calvin Nodsle and Minnesota Youth Shotgun Association Handicap competition. Stone (90) went on to take the high gun Class D category in the Eric Munson and Shamrock Leathers Doubles competition, while Tom Townsend (98) was the Class A runner-up.

Stone’s week got better as the championships were decided over the weekend. She was the high all-around Class D champion with a total score of 364 out of a possible 400 targets. Alexandria’s Steve Schmidt also finished 10th in the Minnesota Handicap Championship on Sunday.

Eric Munson of Cokato headlined the whole shoot by winning his 6th state doubles title with a perfect 100. New Germany’s Nick Kubasch won the singles championship with a 200, while Monticello’s Sue Michaelis won the ladies crown and the high all-around ladies title.

Michael Stadt of Inver Grove Heights took the Memorial Handicap after busting 99 of 100. Glen Lonnemann of Worthington won his first high-all around title, while Fairmont’s Richard Wolf took the state handicap title with a 99 out of 100.
