VFW baseball: Alexandria finishes fourth in tournament

Eric Morken, Echo Press Second baseman Toby Helgeson stepped on the bag to record an out before throwing on for an attempted double play in Alexandria’s first game of its home VFW tournament against Cold Spring last Friday morning.

The Alexandria VFW finished fourth in its own tournament last weekend, winning two and losing two.

Proctor took home the team title, with BOLD second, Cold Spring third, Worthington fifth and Madison sixth.

Alexandria dispatched both Cold Spring and Madison in the first two games, winning 7-4 and 14-6.

Jeff Swedberg had a pair of hits in the first contest as Mitch Thompson picked up the victory on the mound as he went six and two-thirds innings.

Against Madison, Alexandria had to come from behind with a 10-run sixth inning for the win after trailing 6-4.

Christian Anderson and Drew Winter scored twice in that big frame, with Swedberg, Patrick Leary, Cody McLaughlin, Grant Becker, Toby Helgeson and Mitch Thompson each scoring one.

Thompson also picked up the pitching win in relief.

Alexandria fell to eventual champion, Proctor, in game three 10-5 as McLaughlin took the loss in five and a third innings.

Swedberg again led the offense as he had two runs on two hits.

Cold Spring retaliated for its opening game loss with a 7-6 win over Alexandria in the final contest.

Bowden took the loss with four and two-thirds innings of action.

Winter, Swedberg, Leary, Becker, Aaron Steidl and Riley Hvezda each had runs in the game.

Alexandria is hosting Benson tomorrow, Thursday. They were to have played Morris at Carlos last night, Tuesday.
