Baseball: Carlos Whitecaps look to defend state title
The Carlos Whitecaps are hoping to defend their State Class B title this year and have won four straight after dropping their opener.
The Perham Silver Pirates handed the Whitecaps a 7-3 loss to open the season, but Carlos rebounded with a huge 24-1 victory over Nisswa in the home opener, then traveled to Fort Ripley for a 6-4 victory before taking a pair from Nisswa in a doubleheader on the road.
Game one against the Merchants saw Mark Illies pick up the 8-3 win as he went the distance, scattering nine hits over seven innings and allowing just three earned runs while striking out 10.
Carlos picked away at Nisswa, scoring one in the first and the third before adding three in the fifth and sixth as Julio Hall went two-for-two, driving in four runs.
Ryan Burgau added a run on a two-for-two performance, Brad Anderson was three-for-four with three runs and an RBI, and Mark Illies was three-for-five with a run and an RBI.
Game two finished as a 15-7 win for the Whitecaps as Brian Jacobson took the mound and went the distance as he allowed nine hits and seven runs while walking two and striking out four.
Carlos came out swinging in the second game, scoring two runs in each of the first two frames before breaking out with a six-run third inning. They added another solo run in the fifth, then capped the performance with four in the sixth.
Endres was the big stick in this game, going five-for-five with five RBIs, scoring one run himself.
Hall and Steidl each had a pair of hits, with Anderson, Illies and Hall driving in two runs each.
