Legion baseball: Post 87 tops Litchfield

The Alexandria Post 87 Legion baseball team blew open a close game with seven runs in the eighth inning to beat Litchfield 13-2 on Tuesday night.

The local nine got off to a good start in district play behind 16 total hits. Chris Vogeler had a big day out of the leadoff spot with four hits and four runs scored. Parker Giroux reached base all five times on three singles and two walks, while Eric Carlsen had three hits and combined with Dalton Leuschke for six RBIs.

Alexandria never trailed in this one. Post 87 grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and led 3-0 before Litchfield got to AJ Anderson for its first run in the bottom of the fifth.

Anderson got the win by going the first six innings. He struggled with his control, issuing eight walks, but found a way to overcome that. He allowed just one unearned run on six hits, while striking out five. Beau Backhaus came on in the seventh and worked the final two innings.

Alexandria was back at home for a league game against Marshall on Wednesday night. That was a final tuneup for Post 87’s annual 4th of July tournament. They will take on Owatonna tonight, Friday, at 6 p.m. Alexandria will then battle North Saint Paul at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and Fergus Falls at 3:30 in the afternoon.
