Baseball: Fearing takes home big awards for Osakis
The Silverstreak freshman was named MVP, Rookie of the Year and top offensive player
If the Osakis baseball team learned one thing for sure this past season, it’s that it should be set at shortstop for the next three years.
Freshman Drew Fearing put a stranglehold on that position and ran away with the most hardware at the team’s season-ending awards banquet recently. He was named the team’s MVP, Rookie of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year after leading the team with a .485 average.
Fearing led the Silverstreaks in almost every major offensive category. His 22 runs, 33 hits, nine doubles, three triples, 24 RBIs and 17 walks were all tops on the team. He had an on-base percentage of almost .600. Those numbers made him an easy choice as an All-Prairie Conference player.
Kilar Zimmel joined him on that team. Zimmel is also a big part of this team’s future as only a sophomore. He was third on the team in innings pitched with 22 as he compiled an ERA of 3.50. Doug Zimmel, Jordan Fredrick and Josiah Hetland were also named honorable mention All Prairie Conference.
Hetland took home two team awards after being named the Most Dedicated and being honored with the Silverstreak Award. The senior hit .333 with 13 RBIs, while also racking up a 3-0 record and a 4.28 ERA in 18 innings on the mound.
James Cowdery and D. Zimmel rounded out the team award winners. Cowdery was named the Most Improved player after hitting .278. Zimmel earned the Defensive Player of the Year Award by handling the pitching staff as the team’s primary catcher. He had 16 putouts and 12 assists on the defensive side of the ball.
Osakis wrapped up its season with an 11-10 record and a 4-5 mark in the Prairie Conference. The Silverstreaks fell in the first round of the Section 5A tournament to St. John’s Prep.
Many of the Osakis varsity players will be a part of the town’s first Legion team this summer. The team opened the summer with an 11-1 win over Clinton on Monday night. Alexandria’s Gerry Hoelscher will serve as the team’s head coach.
